2016 BioBlitz Focus: Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths)
Lead Taxonomist: Michael Sabourin. Sabourin is an internationally known lepidopterist and field naturalist.
Check-in from 9 – 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 and continues through lunch on Sunday, July 24. There will be an official orientation and Bioblitz strategy session at 10 a.m. in Moore Auditorium, on the Institute campus on Saturday. The collection period will commence Saturday at Noon and continue for 24 hours. It will be focused on the Schoodic Peninsula of Acadia National Park. Lab work will be spent sorting, pinning, and identifying collected as well as photographed specimens. This annual event is sponsored by Maine Entomological Society, Maine Forest Service, University of New Hampshire, University of Maine, and Schoodic Institute
Since 2003, the National Park Service has hosted a series of field events to help document the biodiversity of Acadia National Park. Over the course of 24 hours during each BioBlitz event, biologists and naturalists conduct a rapid assessment of a specific group of invertebrates. While BioBlitzes cannot provide a complete inventory, they can document species occurrence, provide estimates of species richness, and identify rare and unique species.
