The Andean Biotic Index (ABI) is a measurement of water quality based on the presence of 47 different families of macroinvertebrates. Each family is assigned a point value based on its tolerance to environmental degradation and pollution. The presence of families with low tolerance is an indicator of good water quality. Higher ABI scores indicate better water quality, therefore the families with the lowest tolerance are assigned the highest point values
