Do you have one day in June to hike up a mountain, count a few birds, and greatly contribute to our understanding of montane bird populations? Excellent! Then we’d invite you to be a part of the Mountain Birdwatch citizen science community. You don’t have to be an expert—just enthusiastic. The simple protocol and short list of monitored species means that almost anyone with in interest in birds can participate. You’ll count just 10 species of birds (e.g., Bicknell's Thrush, Winter Wren, Black-capped Chickadee, Blackpoll Warbler, and White-throated Sparrow) at 3-6 fixed locations along hiking trails in the montane spruce-fir spruce forests of eastern New York and northern New England. The counts take place on any morning in June with fair weather, and these data provide powerful insight into the health of our montane bird populations.
