Eterna invites contributors to become RNA scientists. Contributors solve puzzles to design specialized RNA-based medicines and sensors, receive feedback after their designs are built and tested in university labs, and work together to build knowledge about how RNA works. The OpenKnot project has asked players to submit thousands of RNA sequences likely to form a complex fold known as a pseudoknot. The sequences are part of a large dataset that is helping researchers develop better models for predicting RNA structure, which may one day help medical researchers identify new drug targets.
