The BioCollect system is part of a suite of data collection, management, visualization and analysis tools for biodiversity information which have been developed by the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) under the Australian Government's National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). The role of the ALA is to support scientific investigations into all aspects of biodiversity through the mobilization, aggregation and linking of all kinds of biodiversity data and making it accessible to researchers, policy makers, natural resource managers, educators and others under open access arrangements. BioCollect is an important component of the atlas toolkit in that it provides a means for people who do not have appropriate tools, to easily collect and make available to others their observations of nature. Anyone can register a citizen science project of any kind for discovery in the project finder, and people running projects associated with biodiversity in some way can freely use the data collection capabilities of the tool if they want to. The BioCollect tool also supports collection of field data for systematic method-based ecological surveys and activity-based intervention projects (eg. environmental protection and restoration projects).
