Individuals, schools and community groups are encouraged to get involved in monitoring waterways in Gladstone and the surrounding areas and upload their citizen science water quality data to our online Harbour Watch MyWater portal where the results will receive a grading score from A to E for each indicator test results
We have a range of resources available to support the community to test your local waterways and increase the awareness of waterway health. We facilitate the use of our Harbour Watch water quality monitoring equipment which is available for short loans to the community to support testing of your waterways. Increased awareness of the health of our waterways and harbour is important for the entire community to understand the impacts industries and communities have on our valuable freshwater and saltwater ecosystems.
Test and Sample for:
• Abiotic water quality indicators including salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and pH
• Ecology indicators including macro-invertebrates (or water bugs) and fish
• Assess riparian vegetation and weed cover as ecological indicators
Harbour Watch will provide data recording sheets and water testing equipment and a Citizen Scientist Field Guide booklet will be provided for future reference.
We will provide initial training and support on how to collect and interpret data with our water quality testing equipment and how to upload the data into the MyWater portal.
All data uploaded by the community on the MyWater portal can be viewed on the interactive map with interactive data and graphs.
