Mississippi River Nutrient Survey

Main Project Information
Goal Help discover where inorganic nutrient sources are in MS River.
Task With the help of a trainer, identify troubled areas of the river

This proposed nutrient survey of the Mississippi River watershed seeks to glean a better understanding of the distribution of inorganic nutrient sources into the Mississippi River.

By conducting this study, we seek to identify 'hot spots' within which to target follow-up research and engineering efforts aimed at decreasing the load of nutrients introduced into this river - and in so doing, successfully mitigate their consequent effect upon the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem.

How to Join

To get started, find the sampling points nearest you by entering your zip code in our search form (link below):

From there, you will be asked whether you would like to volunteer to sample one zone near you. Complete the form provided, and you will be contacted within 24 hours by either Priyan Weerappuli (who is the project coordinator) or your local regional coordinator who will then go over what you will need to know for the actual sampling date.

Required Gear

Access to the Mississippi River and a life jacket. If you have a boat, canoe, or kayak it would be best -- if not, we will try to help connect you with citizens in the area who have volunteered to take samplers out on the water.

Sampling bottles and protocols will be provided to you by your regional coordinator.
