Discover Life is calling all citizen scientists in the DC/Baltimore area to help them map out the occurence of crickets and katydids through the city and suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, DC and Northern Virginia. Participants can track the sounds of these insects during the annual Cricket Crawl event held on the evening of Friday, August 25th 2016.

This project is a collaborative venture between Discover Life, The Audubon Naturalist Society, The Natural History Society of Maryland and the USGS

How to Join

Participants must learn to differentiate between the 6 six species of crickets and katydids that Discover Life is interested in. The organizers provide training on their website:

Updates on walks and classes to help participants become familiar with the crickets and katydids will be ongoing throughout the season in the Baltimore/DC area and will be posted on Facebook and the website.
