Description

The goal of the Spotted Wing Drosophila*Volunteer Monitoring Network (SWD*VMN) is to the track the movement and seasonal biology of the spotted wing drosophila (SWD, Drosophila suzukii).

SWD is a recently detected invasive species in the United States and is a potentially significant pest of berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries) and other crops. SWD has rapidly spread throughout the US, and we want to help farmers and gardeners understand WHERE and WHEN this new insect is active.

Contact the NC State University Small Fruit & Specialty Crop IPM Laboratory (hannah_burrack@ncsu.edu) for a monitoring kit & access to the training webinars.

The best times to monitor SWD are from March through November, so trapping kits will be sent during these months. Trapping kits will ship within 2 weeks of request.

Custom trainings for classrooms, gardening clubs, and other groups can be developed upon request.

Required Gear

We will provide all the gear you'll need to start trapping as well as voucher SWD samples to help you ID your flies.

You will need access to a microscope (10-40x magnification), and a computer with internet access to enter your data and see other volunteers information.

If you do not have a microscope, you can still participate as a "point" monitoring site and send your samples to the NC State University Small Fruit IPM Lab for identification. Point monitoring sites will responsible for USPS shipping costs of samples ($5-10 per shipment).
